...When there wasn't any pressure to doll them up?

My main example for this case is GoldenEye against recent FPS games.

During the time of GE, there was no pressure to put amazing graphics in, because it wasn't possible. Therefore the game won its merits with good graphics, but great gamplay and design. Nowadays, a new game will have to have impecable graphics and loads of unnecessary gizmos just to get a few 1000 sales.

Look at Tetris, it's certainly the gameplay which won people over there.

;)

.. doesn't look too much like a dream to me, how about you?

the loop the loop was part of "stunt car racer", while the point of "test drive" was, as you say, to park in a garage.... exciting!!

I think games where better when they didn't try to cover so many genres. Ie: Tony hawks Underground. Who wants to drive a car with the physics of a skateboard? A far cry from 1989 when Test Drive II was just about you driving a porsche/ferrari as fast as you could.

true, but other games like Mario World and Yoshis Island had more polish in that they were totally consistant and worked well with each other.

i think he meant that although *technically* (in terms of console power) todays graphics are superior, the older games had more care taken over whether or not they worked as a part of the games verisimilitude.

you're right about the amusingly slow backgrounds though :)
SoR also featured those specials that involved the guns popping up from the squad car, despite being longer than the roof. hmmm... :)

I can see what you're getting at, but I seem to remember that most older games (such as Streets of Rage) had background animations that moved at about 3fps.

Of course it does Del...2D games maybe old...but you cannot fault the graphics...There are no big squares in the way or a bad frame rate...New games in 3D seem to have more problems that come along with them.

Hope that explains what i ment.
