Just finished reading this excellent book last night, and I must say it's probably one of the best books i've read since Battle Royale. Funny, witty, charming and most of all - engrossing. Don't be put off by the massive picture of a daisy on the front, because it's no romance or pansy-shizer.
The plot is simple, An editor (named Edwin De Valu) publishes a book that is the "self help book with it all". It lets you stop smoking, lose weight, better sex and a guide to be happy. Sounds good? Yes - It sells loads and the world is practically destroyed by just a book. Everyone is happy and mindless - following the book like a bible.
Will Ferguson puts a meaning behind the whole story though - Our world is based around sadness. We feel insecure about ourselves - we buy clothes to make us look cool, women buy magazines to help them lose weight. What if there was a self help book that actually worked? There wouldn't be any insecureness - people would feel happy about themselves. Mens Health/Womens health companys would go out of business. Pubs would close because people wouldn't drink. It'd be a global disaster. And that's what the book is based on.
Excellent book - Excellent read. Forget watching mindless TV, Read a book for a change.
Now need a new book - Anyone got any reccomendations?
I second the notion of the ruliness of this book. Read and worship.
Anyway, I just finished Stephen King's 'From a Buick 8' which pulled me in immediately. Sometimes frustrating because there's always another question, but not always an answer.
I really enjoyed 'Tietam Brown' by Mick Foley. A tale of a boy getting to know his father, fall in love, and cope with rage. Contains the immortal line "Well Andy, whenever possible, get them to lick your ass".
The next in line is a classic. George Orwell's 1984. Must be 12 years or so since I last read that.
Horror
Obscene
Gore
Suspense
Thrillers
'Real Life'
Good books basically.
It's gonna be difficult to find a book that matches up to the qulity of Battle Royale/HappinessTM.
Book 1 - The Real Story.
It's an excellent series - a sci-fi series charting the exploits of various nefarious characters.
It's got everything - despicable scum, evil people, technical jargon, futuristic speculation and a twisting storyline that capture your attention from the word go.
