Recently I’ve noticed several posts titled “2001 Gaming” or “2000 Gaming” well what about the good old days? The days when the Sega master system and the NES were the height of gaming technology. Yeah, those were the days! I remember when I first got my NES. The box must have been twice the size of any modern day console packaging. I quickly ripped it open, set up the system, plugged in my trusty light gun and had a satisfying game of duck hunt. Now that’s a game! But wait. This is a double cartridge! Mario 1 as well. I was in heaven. I can’t even begin to remember the hours, days, WEEKS! I spent playing this game.

Well any way, a few years past, I got bored of my NES, didn’t have the same appeal. But what’s this? A new console? One that can be held in your hand? A “Gameboy” you say? This truly was amazing. Sure it was the size of a brick, the batteries lasted 10 minutes and there were only three games available, but so what? This was a real advancement. And look at this. I CAN GET MARIO 1!! So I’ve already completed it, that doesn’t matter, I now have the chance to play it on a smaller, low res. screen. YAY!

Well anyway, my main point is, that I’d like us all to step back from your THPS2 and your Grand Tourismo, and take a moment to appreciate where these games originated and what the gaming market would be like today with out the early pioneers of The NES, Master System and early Gameboy. Thank you these consoles. You have made my day.

We must recognise the roots of gaming, in order to appreciate what we have.. I mean SegaRally is a great game but Stunt car Racer on the Amiga was just as playable! Likewise many of the older games are still fun and playable.
