Hands up who remembers the series? Just shows how old you are (or how much UK Gold you watch, perhaps).

Shakey sets, bad monster make-up and endless quarrys were not enough to put off the masses of fans who have been waiting for the BBC to see sense and bring Dr Who back.

Plenty of actors have taken on the role of the time-travelling hobo, from the 7 small screen Doctors and 2 movie Doctors to the spin offs and spoofs which have mocked and praised the show in equal measure.

Why, then does this programme have such a big following? Well, firstly it's the longest running single sci-fi series ever, no small feat, that. Then there are the stories. With a low budget for special effects, the writers had to pull something great out of the bag story-wise, and characters were often well rounded. This was further improved by the Virgin New Adventures, a series of books that carried on the adventures of the 7th Doctor.

So where now? Will we at last have the set and special effects that Who fans have longed for? Will this be to the detriment of the story? Who will play the Doctor now? Who should? It looks like we have a long time still to wait, with the series rumoured to be showing in 2005 it seems that we have to wait a long time...if only there was a TARDIS nearby..

The poor special effects was where all the charm lay...

They seemed fantastic back when I was 7, even those early black and white ones. :-)
