What do you think?

Infringement of civil liberties or useful for solving immigration and fraud problems?

In the USA for example, you legally need to carry ID. I hate that.

However David Blunkett has said that it would not be necessary to carry the cards at all times, bit like a drivers license. Although if requested it would have to be handed in to a police station within a week.

Good idea, as long as there was some PERFECT way of making sure they couldn't be forged/faked.

You get arrested or found dead, they know who you are and where you live (assuming it has your address... and assuming the killer hasn't taken it)

What if your identity card was stolen by someone with a random vendetta against you? They could come after your family and such if the identity card had your address on it. Your home security could be compramised. this is just an extreme situation though.

I am not a lawbreaker and so ID cards wouldn't really annoy me much but I wouldn't like to be hassled into getting one. Besides, don't people have to pay £40 or so to get one? Won't matter as I will be off to Canadia.

I think the government is building up ofr a U-turn on the introduction of ID cards. The 40 pound cost suggested is bound to sway public opinion against ID cards allowing the government to do a U-turn stating something along the lines of: 'it was a good but unfeasible idea'.
