The headset makes the game more lifelike in a way. It is crucial for talking tactics in FPS games and is obviously used for trash-talking arrogant Yanks.
Obviously there's the quick voice messages you can send, and without a headset, you're unlikely to build up a long friends list, as nobody will be able to get to know you.

Why do you need the headset for live. Is it part of the experience havin' 2 speak to the chavs your facing
I'm fairly sure the Optimatch thing in most games gives you games with a similar connection speed, as well as similarly skilled opponents.
It's quite decent. You don't get much lag unless you join a game hosted on the other side of the world.

Maybe but the cost of a routor (sp?) plus a wireless thingy (due to xbox being in bedroom) would setme back £100 before I've entered that different world.
