Interesting article about the man and the company behind the Phantom games console. Sounds very dodgy to me.

"We were surprised that there wasn't even an office at the address listed for Infinium Labs. The use of a post office box as the main contact point for Infinium Labs was very surprising as well. We spoke to Mr. Roberts today and he confirmed that there are currently no physical offices for the Infinium Corporation, but he assures us that they are on the way. Combine these elements with a past history of bankruptcies and failed business ventures, and it paints a very bleak picture of the possible success of this company."

a good point but many games are cheap now, loads of PS2 games are £20 or less and older PC games can be very cheap.

Maybe it was just something to get rival companys to fight and work harder at marketing their console ?

Maybe the thinking behind downloading games is that the customer isn't paying for packaging, booklets, CDs (as cheap as they are) and labour to pack the stuff leading to cheap games.

I said before, only great value could save the Phantom.

I don't think this is a fake, as some of the components are listed as Nvidia, Intel and even a WindowsXP Kernel. If it was a fraud, can you imagine a company like Microsoft, or Intel letting them carry on using their brand names to promote a phony product? No, didn't think so. It looks like it's going to be the first in a long line of "online only" consoles. Broadband and the internet will be essential to the PS3 and Xbox2, so maybe the Phantom is coming out too early, as there is no proper customer base for it yet?

I can go down town and buy a game from Dixons or Choices within minutes of leaving my house so downloading is much slower and is also more unreliable.

Also when i'm bored of a boxed game I can sell it or if it was faulty when I bought it I can return it to the shop with the receipt, you can't do that with a downloaded game plus there must be a limited amount of hard drive space to store games on.

But you could go out and buy them in that time. I take it the Phantom has a hard drive but what happens when the hard drive is full and you want more games. Will you need to delete some games that you payed for or get another hard drive for them? You don't get the sparkly boxes and books or the option to take the game to a friend's house, unless you take the whole console I guess.

I think its quite possibly a fake as it would make no sense to try to enter the console market at this stage, unless it was to be more powerfull than the current consoles out at the moment.

Thing about that is that people don't see how much quicker it will be to get games. Apparantly from what a few people suggested in comment mail order takes only about 2 hours, because OBVIOUSLY downloading a game with a 500k broadband doesn't take aslong as waiting 3 days for it to drop through your door.

The Phantom won't make it even if it is genuine, with PC, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, GBA, PSP (when it arrives) and that nokia thing dose the world need another console at the moment? proberly not but the fact you have to download games isn't a very good selling point.

And another thing, I've hardly seen any marketing of this so called Phantom console so with it's target customer been broadband uses which are in short supply as it is in the UK, only a fraction of them will know it even exists and even less will choose it over PC, PS2 or Xbox.

Result: Doomed

Never before has a console snatched defeat from the jaws of victory as admirably as the Phantom.
