Ralf Firman shows why he is the World Champion with a pole position lap to be proud of. Conditions were tricky and Firman looked relaxed and super fast. Jordan's hopes rest on him in their bid to be Constructors Champions.
The race to be 2nd in the drivers title is also hotting up with Heidfeld yet again qualifying high with 4th place and Alonso languishing in 15th. It's been an explosive run for Heidfeld with a win and 2 second places in the last 3 rounds and more points a real possibility. Button and Villeneuve are facing an uphill battle for 2nd but Button might make the points from 10th. Villeneuve is stuck in 19th.
The eyes also begin to focus on the back of the field. Toyota and Ferrari are locked in a battle to avoid last place in the Constructors Championship. Ferrari were the worst team last year but recent results have given them a 6 point lead ahead of Toyota. It looks bad for Toyota with both Ferraris in the top 8 after qualifying. Da Matta is the closest Toyota to the points in 9th but Panis is 18th.
It's been a real season of misery for Panis. This time last year, he was locked in a battle with Frentzen to become World Champion, eventually winning it. Panis then moved from B.A.R to Toyota and his fortunes have changed. Now Panis needs 2 points to avoid becoming the worst driver in the 2003 season. Irvine, last year's wooden spoon winner, has scored more points than last year but he is a similar position and just needs to stay ahead of Panis to be safe. Irvine starts 22nd and last for the race though.
Firman takes pole position and Jordan will be delighted with that. Pizzonia is on a mini roll at the moment after 4th in the last race. He will be alongside Firman in 2nd. Michael Schumacher could use a few points and 3rd on the grid is a good place to start. Heidfeld has propelled himself to possibly 2nd in the Drivers Championship and will start 4th. Montoya will want to wrestle 4th away from Sauber and will start 5th. Coulthard will want to beat both Sauber and Williams and take 4th in the Constructors for McLaren. He will start 6th. Trulli is threatening Jordan in 7th place and Barrichello gives Ferrari a lot of joy with both cars starting in the top 8 with Barrichello 8th.
