To save you the time it takes to click the link, Brian Stevens, the police liaison officer to the family of Soham murder victim Jessica Chapman, has been arrested along with a woman, on charges of perverting the course of justice in providing an alibi relating to dropped charges of child sex and computer porn against Stevens.

Now you could argue that this implies guilt of the child sex and computer porn charges. My question is this.

Does it make it any worse that this man was integrally involved in (high profile or otherwise) cases involving the abduction and/or murder and/or sexual assault of children? Or has the man become more vulnerable to committing such crimes as part of his daily exposure through his work?

It's a difficult one to call; the media painted him as an evil paedo, and certain of our mighty news organs are reluctant to backtrack on that assertion. So it's difficult to entirely trust reporting on this.

That said, it would seem that he got off on a technicality. I'll be interested to see how this pans out.

Well, you can talk about methodology and getting into the mind of a criminal and so on, however, are you ever really able to be completely detached from such things, and still remain sympathetic to the family?

Certainly he must have become in some way desensitized to such images. So whilst that cannot be entirely attributed to his alleged connections with child and computer porn, his desensitization must be a factor in the extremity of the images he was allegedly viewing.

As for the war crimes example, I think that's a bit extreme.

The reason that viewing exploitative pornography is treated so seriously is because it provides a market for the criminal activity.

It's kind of like the difference being caught in possession of an illegal narcotic for personal use, or with intent to deal.

Good question.

I think you have to have a sense of detached superiority when doing such a job as his as he will no doubt be exposed to some disturbing images. He has obviously had more access to these images etc while at work but I don't think he has been more vulnerable as a result of this. Bear in mind that he had been working on sensitive cases like this for a while.
Therefore I think that it is worse that he was involved in cases of such a sensitive calibre as he supposed to be championing justice and solving them rather than be perverted by them. The fact that he set up a fake alibi in order to clear his name only serve to reinforce the point.

It's like assigning Milosevic to investigate war crimes, if you get my gist.
