The Japanese track is well liked by the drivers as it's technically sound and also has places to be committed. Overtaking can be rather tricky with the only recognised spots at the final chicane and the hairpin corner but they require a very good car to keep close through the preceding corners.
Last year in quaifying, all eyes were on the three Championship challengers, Villenueve (although his chances were pretty much dead in the water), Frentzen and Panis. It was advantage Villeneuve at the end of the qualifying hour as he took pole position. Frentzen got himself 6th place ahead of Panis' 9th.
The way it stood in the Championship, Villeneuve had to win and hope Frentzen and Panis didn't score. Frentzen was in the best position. All he had to do was finish ahead of Panis if Panis made it into the points. Panis had to score points as Frentzen had scored one more second place that Panis and had both won 2 races. The tension was certainly building.
Qualifying was damp but the race was totally wet, meaning we were in for an exciting finale. A lot of cars spun, crashed and retired but Panis and Frentzen were running together for the whole race. Villeneuve's hopes ended on lap 28 when he crashed out. It was on lap 52 of 53 that one driver took the initiative. Frentzen was not as quick as Panis but Frentzen had 5th place and Panis was 6th. Panis had to overtake to win the Championship. In a bold move, Panis overtook Frentzen and took 5th place and the World Championship.
B.A.R tend to go very well round Japan but if it's dry, it could be a different story. Jordan had a very average race last year and we want to improve this year. Renault too had an average race so it looks like advantage B.A.R heading into Japan.
The Japanese Quaifying will be Sunday 14th September
The Japanese Race will be Wednesday 17th September
The final SR F1 Championship topic of 2003 will be a special award ceremony and will be posted after the race.

I just want him to do something good for me, and bad for someone else. =P
If he knocks out Alonso and Heidfeld I'll be happy. That is, if Button comes second. :)

That's an interesting point. I wonder why I never saw that? :)
Panis was the Champion last year at this track, but could find himself the Chump.
