Possibly the worst managerial decision in english football in the last ten years was to leave gazza behind for world cup 98! iwould have brought him to 2002! not for the football but for the team spirit, when you get gazza in the squad we always seemed to play so much better, he didn't even need to be on the pitch you could just hear from what the players said and the pictures you saw in training that he was immense for team morale. With people like sheringham to joke about with we had team spirit were as now it just looks like we have eleven quality players lumped together.
When i watch england at the moment i don't see much character. we lack the terry butchers, the paul inces, tony adams, paul gascoigne's, the kind of player who drives us on and you actually feel they are dterermined to give it there all, they are the fighters thegrit players and the players who you just feel proud to watch on the pitch, and at the moment i see nothing like that. as far as i am concerned we have a team which leadership and passion so much. I
Look at beckham and think the same as i did when he got appointed captain he is a poor choice (when compared to captains of old), Thouoghly nice guy, exceptionally good footballer, he leads by example put thats not always a good thing. No matter what anyone says a shouter and some one with presence is nearly always the best for the captaincy, the kind of player who can raise the team when times are low, and believe me Tony adams threatening to 'rip you f*****g head off' if you don't play harder, is damn site better motivation than a few crafty passes, beckham would do even if he wasn't in charge.
It reeks of the bad school habit of copping out and just making your best player captain, and this was completely verified when the armband got given to owen who isn't a leader either. The main problem is looking at the Squad i see no real leaders guarnteed a first team place.
Except in exceptional circumstances i am also of the firm belief that the captain should be a centre back, or a centre midfielder. they have the position to force their influence onto the team and are always part of the game, always in a position to communicate with everybody and rally them on.ferdinand has presence but whether he has the leadership qualities remains to be seen, although he does do a good job marshalling the defence. John Terry is perhaps one of the more natural leaders we have but he still has to try and break his way into a first team place and that is by no means assured.Scholes is a great player but prefers not to take the limelight. we Lack a fair amount of team spirit and leadership and look very much the tim henman's of the football world....always got the ability to win it but maybe not the character and mental strength.
96 epitimised the glory days, that was when we had the spirit and the strength of character, even venables seemed like a dodgy geezer and we just had openness and confidence and that made the football flow, at last in Rooney and cole we have a bit of the cockiness and confidence of old, and maybe even if they aren't gonna be first choice in the future at least we have players with confidence and character. Cos at the moment we seem pretty boring and it comes accross in our football.
