Taking a look through various papers and looking at the photographs that are supposed to be disturbng and evoking pity (such as starving children, and injured people in Third World countries), I often find that I don't greet them with any sort of emotion at all, other than anger at having our moral conscience used like that. So I ask you, have these constant bombardments of pictures and video images of malnurished and injured children and adults that we see every day in the paper and the news and adverts left us desensitised? I think so.

I'm desensitised. I know this, because I can make light of anything. It's a great defence mechanism for when something REALLY gets to me, but then there's not that many things that get to me these days. Hence why most of my posts in here are 'quippy' comments. Especially with political posts, that stuff just doesn't interest me anymore.

I guess my revolutionary hippy days are long gone :(
Along with the flares. :)

Alternatively you could say that until now we have been ignorant of so much. Technology allows so much that 10, 20 years ago, it would have seemed impossible to witness.

The new National Geographic has some very interesting photographs in, taken by one of their people from inside Iraq during the Iraq war, from the Iraqi side. I honestly can't see how anyone can not have any reaction to them. I'll see if thet are online...

Of course we are desensitized, and we get more so with every generation.
All you have to do it look at the evolution of the pornography industry to understand that. Countries which have accepted porn for longer have fewer taboos, and those taboos the do still have are considered more extreme.

The same is true for violence, swearing etc.

I am shocked sometimes at the language that I hear on TV in the early evening, but more so by the language I hear from local children in the street, or between parent and child.

With all these reality TV shows, and live feeds from warzones on the 24 hour news programmes I wonder how long it is before we watch someones life end, live, and fail to bat an eyelid.

Yes. Nothing shocks me anymore. That didn't used to be the case.
