The season's end is fast approaching and we head to the USA and Indianapolis for the penultimate round of this year's Championship. The track consists of about half of the famous oval and the infield section is described as 'Mickey Mouse' by the majority of the drivers. I wouldn't be surprised to see it change in the near future.

The Championship this year is a two horse race but the leader of the Championship, Firman, has a 17 point lead with only 20 available. Alonso must finish at least 2nd and Firman not scoring to take the Championship to the final round. We are certain of a rookie World Champion for this season. The Constructors Championship is still pretty close and 6 teams are still mathematically in with a chance of taking the title.

Last year's Championship battle took a dramatic turn when Frentzen qualified in pole position and took 2nd place to tie with Panis at the top of the standings. Panis could do nothing as he retired on lap 58 and watched his 6 point lead disappear. Also, Villeneuve, who was still in the hunt for the title, retired on lap 56 and his hopes were pretty much ended with it.

Jordan, Arrows (now Senna G.P), Williams and McLaren went well round here last year and all scored points. Jordan took the better results in the race with 1st for Sato and 3rd for Fisichella. A similar result for them this year will put the Constructors Championship beyond the reach of most.

There is still plenty of pride to play for. Irvine only scored 2 points last season and 7 this season. He will want to avoid the wooden spoon for the second consecutive year. Ferrari were the worst constructor last year and are level on points with Toyota this year. A points finish either way will make it interesting in the final race.

Can Alonso take the Championship to the final round?

Not quite. If Jordan score a one two, Renault would have to score at least 9 points to take it to a final race.

What about Constructors? If me and Fishylegs finish 1st and 2nd, we've won?

Or of course Schumacher might eventually win something, and cause a real upset.

Looks like Firman is going to claim the championship on this course. Hopefully Panis will finish the race this time and get in the points.
