Early in the life of the PSX, seems decades ago, i decided to grab myself a copy of tekken and played it till the cows came home, but i found it was one of them games with top playability and little longability.

When Tekken 1 gathered a bit of dust the release of Tekken 2 was upon me, so i thought, 'is this gonna be something speacial or am I not learning from mistakes' so i decided to run down to the nearest video days and hire it and i played it furiously for 24 hours straight and when I returned it I finally had a satisfaction from a beat em up that i finally got my moneys worth out of one.

I did this for Tekken 3 aswell and got the same sense of satisfaction. Then, the launch of the PS2 came and i nipped out to the local Dixons and by luck they had just had some in, so i snapped one up and took it home. With it was the basic perphirals and Tekken Tag Tourney. I got home, set up the PS2 and then put Tekken in and had a bash at it. After about 3 days of playing it I got quickly bored of it.

Is this just me or do all beat em ups have very little lastability? I have to admit I am not a big fan of beat em ups though, my favourites are strategy games and I like the occasional RPG (Final Fantasy). What do you people think?

True, true. Though I'll still be thankful if and when they ever take it on the net.

Atomic, are you honestly telling me that you wouldn't want a Hideo Kojima designed bit of online gaming in the MGS style? I mean, it wouldn't have to replace any story-based game, just act as an additional element to it. I'd play through the Story Mode for practice, then go online and whoop up on some people with Revolver Ocelot or the Ninja. Come on, with all the options in MGS? That'd be the sweetest online game around.

I agree 100% that playing a game on-line increases the lastability ten fold, take age of empires for instance, yeah the campaigns are pretty decent but if I couldnt play it on-line, it would be gathering dust in my cabinet. There are a few exceptions though but these are very rare, the ones that spring to mind are Championship Manager 2000/2001 and Metal Gear Solid

Want to revitalize fighting games? Add online access, battle servers, and a few thousand players all out to kick one another's butt. There's longevity. For example, Half-Life (without online gaming) is a decent game, but it gets pretty dull after a while. Add TFC to the picture and suddenly it's a whole new ballgame; people play the thing almost forever.

BTW, if you like RPGs and you want something with an online component that doesn't cost any additional monthly fee, you might consider looking for NeverWinter Nights by Bioware. It'll either rule the cosmos or bomb out, but the notion of playing an online RPG for free is pretty awesome.

True. I never play a game for more than two hours at a time. If i intend on playing a game for longer i take brakes in between. i.e go get some food :P

I think if you play any game for a few hours straight you will get bored of it soon. I've had T.T.T. for a month now and i'm still playing on it. I don't play on arcade any more, i have a go at survival, time attack and now and again beat the crap out of one of my friends. Saying that i never play with 5 characters as i'm crap with them.

Yeah I like beat-em-ups. In the Tekken series i like it when you complete the game with a certain character and you get to see a movie of the character doing something or other and often can create a mini storyline. A very good touch!

Thats the good thing about final fantasy. Thers a gripping storyline then suddenly you beat the hell out of someone. Although Tekken is so entertaining it doesn't need a storyline
