So I was copying some files from hard drive to floppy.

I get a warning - along the lines of:

The file Thumbs has extra information attached to it that might be lost if you continue copying. The contents of this file will not be affected. Information that might be lost includes:

:encryptable:$DATA

Then in the 'copying' window, I see 'thumbs.db' go across.

The problem? There was no thumbs.db there - the file was just a couple of jpg images I'd used on my web site that I wanted to move to another computer.

I check the folder I was copying - nothing.
So I search the whole computer for the thumbs file... nothing.

Which makes me paranoid I've landed a virus, or my computer is just mental.

Any idea what's going on?

Well theres system files that really should be messed with, and a few are needed in folders like the thumbs.db file. If these werent hidden then a few people would get annoyed about the look of having all these system files in view. You can turn on hidden files in the options of Windows if you really want to see all files on your PC.

Yep even though its not a proper system file in the terms of "delete and your system is messed up". I think its hidden as you wouldnt really want the file showing in all folders especially if you use thumbnails. Theres no harm in deleting it but it will be created again if you use thumbnails in a particular folder.

thumbs.db is a proper windows file. If you have the folder set to show thumbnails of files or pictures a hidden file called thumbs.db is hidden in that folder. Even if you have not set the thumbnail view thumbs.db can be in that folder.

Use Norton or similar to check your hard drive and the floppy, sounds virus like to me - but I'm no expert !
