Hello all.

Lately I've been having problems with laptop.
Everytime I insert a CD and copy something onto the laptop, it'll come up with an error saying something about Cyclic Redundancy Check. I have no idea what this is!
It cancels the copying, so I'll try again but won't do it.

Usually the error pops up 'quicker' when the laptop has been on for a while so I don't know if this has anything with it overheating.

I try restarting every time, but it still won't do it.

It is able to copy files to the laptop if they are about 1/2MB, but anything above that won't do it. Sometimes it even struggles to do the small files.

Anybody know what this is all about?
Thank you!

I think this should be everybody's new tagline.

At first I thought this meant "I have beautiful long hair, but a very small face, about the size of an 'o'. And I'm standing on my head." But I think I've worked it out now.

Nobody would ever, ever know that I was drunk.

U-K is right, Windows performs crc checks on files that it's copying. If you're getting crc errors that normally means a disk somewhere is dying - hopefully it's the CD you had in previously and not either your CD/Hard drive!

All the signs point to it being a knackered CD, so \o/

Aaahh. I think you are right about the 'simple', "cd may be scratched" part..! :D
I copied all of the stuff on a new CD today and copied just fine and the laptop had been on pretty much since I last wrote this.

It's gotta be because of the scratched CDs. I don't really care for CDs.. Tut. I should now!

Thanks for the reply!

It's a way of checking whether data has been transferred accurately. I know nothing about how Windows specifically uses it so this is mostly guesswork, but anyway...

It could be a corrupt file, a scratched disc or something similar. If this is happening with different discs then it's more likely to be a problem with your CD drive. If you have an external drive then you could test it on a different machine to see if it's a connection problem or some weird Windows quirk. But I do think this is going to be a hardware problem, in which case you'd be best taking your machine for a bit of TLC at your local PC shop.

Somebody else probably knows more about this than I do, and they may even have a miracle cure. Fingers crossed.
