I happened to find myself in the local game shop today (seems to happen quite a lot recently) and just happened to overhear three kids talking about games. In particular, they were interested in story of Thor on the megadrive that happened to be playing on the television.
"Look, whats that?" asked the first kid.
"Ah, it's an old role playing game, it must be one of the earlier Final Fantasy games." replied the second.
"Oh yes, they used to make them like that." chipped in the third.
Arghh! If only there were lessons in gaming history. Ignorance for older games seems to be becoming unstoppable as I get older. Kids seem to think there was no life before Sony, no RPG before Final Fantasy and certainly no beat-em-up's before Street Fighter II. I even heard two teenagers talking about Street Fighter 2 the other day, wondering why they called it Street Fighter 2 when there wasn't a first one!
The owner of the shop, a friend of mine, was telling me that he heard a father and son having a similar conversation the other day. The father told his son in a knowing way, "Ah, son, you see that Spectrum up there?" he pointed to a Spectrum 48k box, "that was the first console, I had one of those. And these," he turned and pointed to some megadrive boxes, "were the old spectrum games."
I mean, how are kids going to learn the true and rich history of gaming with those kind of parents! We should open a school for gaming history and teach all kids the importance of Jet Set Willy and Pong. Maybe they might learn what a lot of changes the games industry has gone through to get this far.
