Gary’s blue Ford advanced steadily along the dark narrow dusty road, which was lined on both sides with high fern trees. These trees spread out in all directions for miles and road that Gary travelled on was the only sign of civilisation in this harsh and unfamiliar terrain. Of course, being in the middle of nowhere there were no streetlights showering the road in light and it was only the brave glare of his car’s headlights that provided enough light to navigate the thin twisty thoroughfare.

Gary was exhausted and his eyelids began to slowly dip, the soothing sound of the radio lulled Gary into a false sense of security and as his forehead met with the top of the steering wheel sleep overcame him. This sleep didn’t last long as an acute turn in the road presented an impossible obstacle for the speeding car and the blue Ford ploughed into a gigantic fern. Gary snapped into consciousness upon impact and if it hadn’t been for his seatbelt he would have been catapulted through his windshield.

Gary gathered his breath and noticed the black smoke billowing from his crumpled car bonnet. One of the cars headlights had broken but the other still shone a beam of light that illuminated the inside of the car. Gary opened the car door to go and inspect the damage the crash had caused. The engine had been literally broken in two and a large segment of the tree trunk was lodged in the front of the car. The car was going nowhere.

The first thought that entered Gary’s mind was to ring for help on his cell phone. He dived into the glove compartment and fished out the trust phone, he held down the button to turn it on and the green backlight on the phone gleamed like a beacon in the darkness. But instead of the Nokia logo Gary expected to see, he was confronted with a Low Battery message before the phone turned itself off. Gary repeated this a few times and angrily slammed the phone down on the car seat when he realised his phone was no use to him.

As feelings of helplessness and fear overwhelmed Gary a plan formulated in his mind. In the boot of his car was a torch, he could begin walking along the road until he found a gas station and then phone for help from there. Without further hesitation he grabbed the flashlight, flicked it on and began to walk down the thin tree-lined road in search of help.

When Gary had being travelling what seemed like hours without finding anything, a sharp rustle in the foliage caught his attention. Gary scoured the tree line with the beam of his torch but satisfied there was nothing there he continued walking. A few steps later he heard another more prominent sound coming from the shadowy tree line. Gary ventured towards the sound of the noise and scanned the undergrowth with the beam of his flashlight. But fear set in when the white light of the torch began to weaken to an orange glow and flickered and faded to darkness. Gary was left in pitch-blackness in the middle of nowhere with nobody to hear his screams when a cold hand grabbed his ankle and dragged him into the dark unfamiliar forest.

My mate Danny said exactly the same as you Black Glove, I never have the momentum to write a long story to be honest.

Good. I can imagine this only being the beginning to a longer story. Maybe Satanic rituals in the forest or something. Maybe.

I agree with Unbeliever about the ending, but I liked it on the whole. Good story.

Good one. It ended a bit suddenly though. You could build up the tension a bit more, methinks.

But, on the whole, a good little story.
