His world domination plans coming into effect, just before we have the ability to form our own opinions cruelly stripped away from us - what do you think of the man? I mean, I can respect all that he has done and how he has made his vast fortune... His vast, vast, VAST fortune all by himself, but when he moves in for the kill on the computer and videogames market as a whole I feel my anger levels rising. Now fair enough, people have their many reservations about Sony and their world domination plans, but they won't succeed - we all know that deep down. The problem we face is that Microsoft DO have the ability to force a single format, not without a fight from the other big thre... two i mean... but the possibility is there. Sony are a bigger company than Microsoft, but Sony Computer Entertainment are smaller and money isn't going to be thrown away into fighting a battle with Microsoft. This, in my grim opinion, will lead to SCE's demise - Nintendo's will probably happen faster unfortunately. For everyones sake, I hope I'm very, very wrong. Just my two cents, feel free to have a go at me if you wish!

Does anyone know the story of how windows became big??? Here is the REAL story:

Xerox (the people who make photocopiers), had a huge research facility in America. One day, Mr. Jobs, founder of Apple, is taken on a tour, and is bewildered by what he sees. To begin, there was a Graphical User Interface on the computers (GUI)... ie. u click the button instead of typing in computer code. Amazing! Then he sees touch screen technology... even better! THEN he sees that all the computers are networked!!! Something truely amazing for that time!

Anyway, Jobs goes back to apple, and realises that he wants to copy the GUI interfact as the interface of the Apple Mac OS. So, he rings up Franbk Xerox, and DEMANDS that ll his Researchers be given access to the facility. Xerox agrees (for some stupid reason!), and Apple copy to interface to make the first GUI home interface.

Microsoft see this, so make their own GUI interface. No problem. Then they see Apple has made a clock, Speadsheet and word processor on their OS, so Microsoft copy them too! So obvious was this that Apple sued microsoft... but because laws for computer copywrite weren't in place, they lost!

Anyway, IBM loves both these interfaces, and sees that Apple's is much better, and they come out with new stuff first. So they send top men to Job's house. This is like u having Jesus come to visit u! However, Jobs was having a party, and as a result told IBM to "come back later!" So, IBM picked the Microsoft windows OS for a v. cheap price, but as a consequence all the other computer makers copied them! Had Apple made Mac OS available to computer companies other than themselves, we may have seen that be just as big... bu they didn't! Fools

ERrrrrrrrrr... NOT TRUE! It really depends on the case... and in most cases it is certainly not illegal. To take an example, Codemasters weren't allowed to buy Dev kits for the NES and Master System from Nintendo and Sega, so they reverse engineered their harware, and made their own carts. They were sued, bu won the court case!

Anyway, reverse engineering happens all the time! Companies see that other companies have made a new product, take it appart, and see how it works. It is only illegal if u eventually copy something that is patented/copywrited (eg. Dyson vacuum cleaners).

As for the other stuff that Armatige Shanks said, I can't understand a word of it!

The point is because Sun Microsystems Won, Microsoft cant update its code. Also it shows up the fact that Microsoft are the bad guys!

Not quite!... reverse engineering has been illegal in both the UK and the US for over 10 years now...

MS bought up Mosaic browser... upgraded it and sold it as the original IE...

Ahh... but they've recently decided to stop all Java products altogether... and since 99% of aweb browsers are IE, this does not bode well for the future of Java... back to C++ with us all then...

If I were one of his kids, I'd be just a *little* annoyed about that decision.

Everyone needs a universal hate figure. Bill Gates fits quite well, particularly as many of his marketing techniques are not exactly sporting....

To be honest, if you had 400 billion (or was that million???) would u give over 99% of it to charity, and less than 1% to your kids (remember, his kids only get 3million each, which is almost nothing compared to his wealth)? He wants his kids to be self made like he was, and also wants to spread his wealth.

Why people hate him is beyond me. Maybe the stereotype of computer geeks. Or are people just jealous that he's taken on capitolism and won big time?

Hey I said Amire him for being such a cool businessman

but he didnt invent the internet...lets not get carried away!
He also reverse engeneered Internet Explorer from Netscape Navigator and bundled it with Windows as standard to destroy Netscape. This was uncalled for and only benefits Microsoft!

Microssoft also tried to do the same with Sun Microsystems trying to steal Java from them, luckily Sun sued his but and has made Microsoft pay out a cool £20 million dollars in damages and promise not to be so nasty again!

Hes part bad/part good a bit like a confused DarkVader...Im sure he'll apologise for Windows on his Deathbed!

I heard Gates has given alot of Money to Charity, a couple of million here, a couple of million there (All pocket change to him). Hes also got a Scholarship Programme for Students in the States from an Ethnic Background. So hes not all bad, hes done alot of good!

Of course you have to question the motive for such generous donations and charity work...is it good charity, or good PR!

I hate Windows, but you have to admire the man!
