yeah you need a crossover cable (ethernet) and a credit card. if you dont intend on using computer at same time then you dont need a router but if you do then you will need a router. personally i would get one of the routers recommended by xbox. theyve been tried and tested by the experts so youll feel more comfortable about using them. if dont use a router then youll have to reset your modem after you unplug your xbox and plug your computer back in. its a pain but it is easier than setting up a router.

The modem router costs about £90? I think im right it's too expensive just to play online!
