A cop drama that doesn't feel the need to patronise or resort to cliches to get its message across. A disgraced former undercover narcotics officer is teamed up with an unhinged cop to find the killer of another undercover policeman, killed while supposedly making a drugs bust. Cue Ray Liotta being all angry and mental and Jason Patric being all repressed and eerily calm. However, Liotta's rage and Patric's emotionless facade is all accounted for, it's never just to build tension.
Unflinching in its portayal of drug use and violence, it's masterfully shot and brought to mind Requiem For A Dream with its fast cuts and inter-cut flashbacks. All the time you know a sh*tstorm is gonna go down, but you don't know who's gonna get the brunt of it. By the ending, you've been thrown back and forth so much, it's emotionally exhausting. Liotta is superb and even Patric, who was in Speed 2... *cough*... does an excellent job of playing the family man who has to watch his wife and child leave him because of his undercover work.
You owe yourself to see this film, it's how indie films should be made. Snuggly recommended movie of the week.

Because it was powerful and moving, or just rubbish? Narc isn't exactly in 'Requiem' territory in terms of depression, it's just a good storyline that involves drugs and cops. And Ray the Otter.
Last time Jason Patric did a cops+drugs movie, it was called "Rush" and it depressed me.
He's good in "Your Friends & Neighbours" though
Because it's worth it.
