Anybody done a masters in a non-undergrad subject, how hard was it? Much catching up to do?
After a law degree, I was looking at masters courses in:
Computing
Philosophy
Politics
Psychology
And was really just wondering if anyone had any idea how hard it is to go into one of the courses without undergrad degree experience in the subject.
Cheers.
I did Physics (2.1) at uni and then (after a break of a couple of years) I returned to academia to do MSc in Computer Graphics. It was very tough for the first couple of weeks while they got everyone up to speed, and I had to work very hard throughout the course, but I'm proud to say I was one of only two students who came out of it with a distinction.
One thing you might like to think about though, is what you are going to do with your Masters after you get it. If you're going to start a career in the same field as the Masters you're going to be competing with guys with an additional two or three years experience in the subject. If you're not you're going to have to justify undertaking a Masters you're not going to use, and employers may see it as trying to avoid getting a job, or that you're fickle and change your mind a lot.
Anyway, talk to people running the course and they'll be able to tell you whether you should be able to cope with the course.
Hope this helps.
Some courses are easier than others, obviously. But to catch up for a Masters if you haven't done the degree you should expect to at least spend half the summer reading up on the subject in preparation.
