Personally i expected Viera to bottle it, and hold out for madrid, but fairplay he kept his word. Things looking up for arsenal at the mo as it could have gone very badly for them but things look brighter now. wonder if Viera negotiated a release clause as some of the rumours suggest.

well done to arsenal anyway

I had no doubt these 2 would eventually sign new deals with Arsénal.

If Vieira was "holding out" for anything, it was more money.
I don't know how much he will know be on, but I wouldn't be surprised to see his weekly-wage within the region of a rediculously-high, Beckham-like figure of £100,000.

He's gotta be on more than £60k - I'm sure of it!

And it's not like Real Madrid really need him with their midfield, anyway!
And they're making room for a centre-back now, with McManaman on-his-way.
Arsénal is the best place for any World Cup-winning Frenchman, because of the existing foundation Arséne Wenger has installed.

And as for Pires, well... he's not really all-that-good, anyway!

At least ARSEnal kept their captain and their midfield genius. I hate them in general, but it's entertaining to see these two play, baldy and barnet. :^P

yep if i were him i'd have put a release clause of about 18-20 mill, so its low enough to attract all the good teams in the future, whilst stil ensuring he doesn't screw arsenal over.

Speaking of which, isn't Wenger's contract up soon?

Viera's contract reportedly has a get out clause if Wenger leaves, and also ensures that he is notified of any serious bid made for him, so that he can decide his future.

This is why the negotiations have taken so long. He is leaving the back door well and truly open.
