How Titanic won all thoughs ocars is beyond me. Don't get me wrong. James Cameron is a fantastic director (T2 Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss) but generally the film was an elaborated film. When I first watched it, I thought wow. But now I understand that it was just the fact that the large cinema screen made the the whole 'sinking' moment grand. Shouldn't a truely great movie have impact whether watch in the cinema,TV, plane or through the windows of Argos. I understand why it was nominated anyway, it's a typical Hollywood film.

The oscars seem to deal more with the 'hollywood' style movies. You know, the big budget blockbuster movies. Hence, I believe crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon would not win any award, though it deserves best picture and soundtrack. Director? Well, I not sure, Ridley Sctott did awfully well with Gladiator and Steven Soderbergh also did well with Traffic.

Hmmmmm. That will be a tough one. Crouching Tiger is just too much a different film to win. Oscars usually go for the general films. That's probably why Scorsese didn't win, actually, was ROBBED of his directors oscars for Raging Bull and Taxi Driver. Taxi Driver may have been too different and powerful for the Hollywood scene but Raging Bull, the movie must be in the top ten films list of all times. The directing in that was superb.

Well, lets see what happens anyway.

The way I see the Oscars, they are awarded to the winners by their contemporaries and their peers, not necessarily the general viewing audience.

I agree, Dr. Strangelove was a great movie, and SK should have got an award for it, but perhaps his peers at the time recognised things in the other winners that we as the general public might have missed.

Titanic is a good case in point, I didn't think it was that great a film, although they certainly went to great lengths with the sets. But as just a general film watcher, maybe I missed the finer details?

If I were an actor, which would I prefer, an Oscar? A BAFTA? I think my agent would prefer an Oscar, I think I personally would prefer a BAFTA. Either way, to be acknowledged by your contemporaries and your peers is one of the highest honours I could think of, in any profession.

Oh god, how I forgot to mention Dr Strangelove in this catergory. Peter Sellers in his three roles. Played almost to perfection. I'm not sure who else was up for the best actor gong but surely, to be Sellers he must have been good.

How Kubrick did not win for his screen play here was crazy. And for the directing. WHAT?

Oh god just watch this film.
