The fact that Nintendo haven't had a Major 'Disc' playing console in the last...well...ever seems to be a big factor in the way that people disregard them. I mean obviously DVD's and CD's are the future but think about it....I mean the Gamecube will have Mini-DVD and in the future I, along with so many other people, (mostly Nintendo Fans surprisingly) agree that we will see the latest movie blockbusters on Mini-DVD, I don't know how much the extra DVD playing consoles from Nintendo will cost, some say around £40 more.

But having said this is the PS2 a better buy, I mean CD's are still poplar, and with mini-dics are still in the growth stage, wouldn't you agree? I really think that once the Playstation 2's are all up and running properly then we will see an increase in sales! I think that until most people are confident that a product will be followed up with, in the Gamecube's case, a load of Mini-DVD's, they will hold on to that extra £40 and wait until they see some Mini-DVD's on the shop shelves.

So I think that the Playstation 2 is quite good in the way that it has a 'normal' size Discs, and that Sony know their marketing because they have shown it through the console design idea. Although people have already chipped the Playstation 2 and pirate games are already circling people are still confident that the Playstation does what it is meant to do,...Play games and DVD's.

Nintendo's Anti-Pirate 80MM discs are a good way to combat the piracy pushers as we'll call them, and if all we see of these 80MM disc's are a bunch of Good Nintendo games then so be it. But if the Mini-DVD idea takes off then the £40 pound investors will be rewarded, probably with £25 a time Mini-DVD's but the opportunity stays the same!

I don't think we can properly compare the PS2 and Gamecube just yet, the Gamecube isn't even in PAL Format development and won't be with us for at least another 7 months! I don't know if there will be any ground breaking ideas from Nintendo with the Gamecube, other than the console vbeing about 120MM wide in total I can't see anything that will get in Nintendo's Way.

Again Sony have released their console earlier than Both Nintendo and new comers Microsoft, and it seems that release success is always looming around Sony's release dates, but only time will tell...I hope, being a Nintendo fan, and NOT Playstation 2 hater, that we see one hell of a showdown this Christmas!

Meanwhile we have Sonic Adventure 2, MGS2 and Conker's Bad Fur day to contend with, so don't count the older consoles out yet!

Some questions...

What is the storage capacity of these mini-DVD's?

Presumably, as with the rare mini-CD format (no, I don't mean Mini-Disc), they have a significantly lower capacity than their full-sized counterparts.

If so, will mini-DVD catch on as a movie format? Will it restrict the length of movie? Will it mean no extras? Is the DVD version an add-on or a seperate machine? If a seperate machine, will the dual-format machine drive the costs of development up?

Films on a mini-DVD are unlikely to play in any current DVD player, so unless Nintendo can encourage all DVD hardware manufacturers to include support in their dedicated players, mini-DVD will struggle as a movie format. Which is a shame, as I'm all for miniaturisation.

DVD is taking off big time now, and people who are paying out now won't be impressed if they have to switch formats again any time soon.

Mini-Disc has been around for years, and while it is a good format (better than CD all round, in fact), it has never really taken off. You can't get anywhere near as many albums on MD as you can on CD, very few stores actually sell or stock them, and only a few hi-fi manufacturers provide MD player/recorders.

As with the VHS vs. Betamax issue, it's not always the case that the better technology comes out on top.
