There is nothing wrong with petitions, it's just one way of expressing your opinion, ang getting your point. If someone feel strongly about a certain topic, and think that a petition could help it, than i say go for it!
Petitions have proven very helpful, for example, the pitches in a park near messy me...'s place. Basically, it's a poll, people voting for what they think is right.
