A friend's been having trouble trying to get an old PC up-and-running, and posted about it on another forum, here:

I thought I'd post it here, see if anyone has any idea what could be wrong.

Make sure you're resetting the CMOS properly, by discharging the board first. To do this, turn the PSU off or pull the cable out and turn the board on. If you watch some of the fans inside they may do half a revolution or so, despite there being no power to the unit. Then try resetting CMOS, plugging back in and powering up. I've had a few boards that wouldn't play any other way.

I spent an hour trying to work out what was wrong with it this afternoon, and the motherboard is definitely dead. There are no beeps on startup, and no picture displayed on screen. I tried another CPU I brought with me, and still nothing happened.

I took the system home with me, and tried to use the hardware on another motherboard. It worked perfectly.

Diagnosis: motherboard = dead.

You can match the pattern to some diagnostic tables in your manual. Three short beeps = dead ram or similar, that kind of thing.

I had this problem very recently when I upped the FSB speed to 333Mhz for a CPU that didn't support it. After resetting the mobo I got the same blank screen.

Even though the CPU is not the problem, try using another CPU with the mobo, resetting the CMOS using the jumper then booting it up.
