Put simply, Affiliate Marketing is an Internet-based scheme where a large business rewards affiliates (those who host advertising) for customers who follow that advertising and purchase items.
There are 2 ways to go about this. The first is using a dedicated Affiliate Program.
Affiliate Programs
The Affiliate program will allow you to use banners and links from your site. When a visitor clicks either of these and then buys something from the link you will earn commission.
It doesn’t cost anything to join an affiliate scheme, though you will need to provide bank details for them to pay out the commission. The move visitors you have and the more they click and buy from your links, the more money you will make.
The benefit of this scheme is that they supply a lot of the big name companies rather than just one company and often allow you to take vouchers or cash for your efforts. This widens the appeal to your audience and gives you more chance of someone clicking on your links.
America has a growing market of Affiliate schemes, but the UK is still only represented by a small number. The one I’ve used in the past has been Tradedoubler, which is actually an international company but deals within the UK. This is the company that supports ipoints clicks, so it’s no small time company that will disappear with your money. Tradedoubler can be found here at this link.
The other large Affiliate program is Affiliatefuture which is constantly growing and has a lot of famous names as merchants.
Single Affiliate links
If you’re a fan of one particular large internet shop then chances are it will have it’s own affiliate programme.
One of the biggest of these schemes is Amazon Affiliate Programme Which not only provides banners and links but also lets you advertise certain items from amazon on your own site. This can earn you up to 10% of the purchases visitors make from your site.
Another well known company that provides an Affiliate Scheme is Google Adsense . Although similar to the big Affiliate schemes this works more like a separate scheme and, again, it’s from a big name which makes the process a bit safer.
As simple as…
Once you’ve signed up to one of the above schemes, all you need to do is copy the piece of code that the affiliate scheme will give you and paste it in to your own web-page. The code will allow you to link, often via a banner, to that site or to a specific item. It’s a 5 minute job unless you fancy moving the banner around to place it in a better space on your site.
As a rule, banners usually work best at the top of a site so that visitors see it straight away, just as long as it doesn’t interfere with the look of your site or the title. One tip is to keep your website clear of clutter in order to make it easier to see the banner.
Be Careful
Always go for a recommended and well used scheme rather than just looking on google. There are plenty of scams out there pretending to be proper affiliate schemes and it’s always worth checking with others who’ve used them before you delve into setting up an account.
