a couple of my freinds who have bought ps2's have had some of their games ruined by their consoles. after a month or so of owning the console, circular scratches around the edge of the discs have made games unplayable. Is this common with all ps2's, or are they just careless? please relpy if you have similar problems, as i am considering buying a ps2.
thanks,
Sandy.

I havn't had any disk problems, but I did have my PS2 break... and on Boxing Day! :( I've only recently got it back. Sure I'm happy, but I'm kinda depressed that it broke in the Christmas period. :(.

I've been trying to bag myself a free Game-A-Day prize (all of you have managed it!) but I'm not a very good writer. Can anybody help me into writing a good article? Thanks if you can help me!

It has happened to mine. (See my other post)

Sony got a new one out to me the very next day.(This morning to be exact)

I was told by SCE UK that it is a problem with the original Laser Pick-Up Mechanism that causes the scratches. They told me that the PS2 should work perfectly HORIZONTALLY or VERTICALLY with or without any stands. The replacements that have been sent out come with a revised DVD loading mechanism and an upgraded Laser Pick-Up Mechanism.

So if you have any problems with your system, get in touch with SCE UK and they should be able to help you.

I called SCEE and asked them about this, they said they have had a number of people complain about this and their response has been people use the PS2 in its horizontal position without using the horizontal stand, they did also state there was a small problem with the loading tray when used without the stand. I use my PS2 in the vertical position with stand and have had no problems. One of my colleagues had this and I got him to call SCEE (08705 998877), they sent him a new PS2 and replaced all his damaged games and DVD's. Got customer care but a fundamental design fault!!!!!!

Your friends aren't necessarily careless - some PS2's do scratch CD's. Not all of them, though.

I've had mine since launch day, and it's been 100% problem free.

About 5% of PS2's so far have been defective in some way, but this is no more than any other console. The only reason there's been so much fuss is that the machine received so much hype that everyone expected it to be perfect in every way. As with all electronics, that's impossible.

Anyway, if you want a PS2, go and buy one. There are sufficient PS2's available now that, should you have any problems, you should get a replacement almost immediately.
