Right, I downloaded a sort of a tweak program for my broadband connection but I've come to an option that I'm not sure about. I have to choose if my connection is Dialup, DSL, DSL (PPPoE), Cable Modem and Extreme. Now, I know that Dialup wont apply to me, neither would Cable Modem or Extreme, but I'm not sure between DSL and DSL (PPPoE). I don't really know what 'PPPoE' means. So can someone help?

I have an ADSL modem by the way, at 512k.

The program is called TCPOptimizer, and yeah, I think it's from America (arn't all programs). I'm not bothering with it anymore now though but I'll visit adslguide.co.uk and see what tweaks they can offer.

PPPoE is Cable modem, ADSL runs on PPPoA. Thats why I think he should not bother with the program as its most likely made for American connections which do differ from ours. Using this program could actually make his connection worst.

I wouldnt bother using the program unless you are ABSOULTY sure that its for the UK. If its an American program it will use settings that do not give the best results for UK users. For example the MTU(Maximum Transmission Unit) on ADSL here in the UK should be 1458 or under, yet in America its 1500. BT are actually changing it to 1500 over here but people still find using 1500 is slower than 1458.

Best thing is to download a program called DrTCP and then set only the MTU and RWIN values. These are the only things that need to be changed on a normal ADSL connection.

2 common settings are 1430 for the MTU with a RWIN of 13900 or a MTU of 1458 with a RWIN of 12762. Go to www.adslguide.org.uk and find out more info on the message boards, and also do a speed test. If your 512K ADSL is getting 470K of true data(510K or something like that with overheads) then your connection is pretty much at its limit. If your speed was 450K then you should tweak your connection using the 2 different settings above.

I wouldnt bother using this program if I was you as its not really needed. If you can't find DrTCP then post a message with your email address and i'll send it to you.

PPPoE is the handshake/network discovery protocol ADSL cable modems use. I think there is also PPPoA which they may be classing as "DSL" but tbh I don't know. Have a sniff around your modem settings, if you see something with PPPoE enabled then you have your answer.

I'd go for DSL or Cable Modem.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
