Looking Through the Eyes of Samus
Retro Studios' Metroid for GameCube is a first-person shooter. Breathe and click.
February 15, 2001
IGNcube has learned that Retro Studios' forthcoming GameCube take on the Metroid franchise is not a third-person action-shooter as expected, but rather a first-person shooter in the style of Half-Life. Indeed, players will see through the eyes of series' heroine Samus.
Evidently the title, which has been in development since shortly before Space World 2000 last August, originally began its life as a third-person game. Interestingly though, product evaluators at Nintendo were allegedly not overly impressed with the direction Metroid was headed in and forced a change of genre to first-person shooter.
Though it's hard to imagine the beloved franchise transformed so drastically, it should be noted that Retro Studios has swooped up all sorts of talent perfectly fitted to tackle such a daunting task – namely designers and programmers who worked on Quake and Half-Life previously. Word on the inside is that the game looks absolutely beautiful and that its team has worked hard to polish camera problems so often associated with first-person shooters. It is not known, however, if Metroid will feature a third-person view that can be toggled by the player (a la Jedi Knight). <<< Would Be Good!!!!
