This could be the stop-gap answer before writeable DVD players come out, but of course there will be good and bad points about such a system.
A good point would be you could record digitally and have a better picture/sound when recording.
A bad point would be that a hard drive would probably not be able to be removed, so if you have just recorded something that you want to keep, you won`t be able to put it away like a video VHS tape so nobody would accidently wipe it, unless there will be a way of protecting a certain part of the drive to be (no-writeable) so nobody wipes that favourite movie.
Also the hard drive will have to be a big one, unless there will be a way of compressing the data, but recording those half an hour shows you can miss wouldn`t be a problem.
There will be the case of copy-write protection, with a hard drive built into a DVD player, it might mean a pirate`s dream of easily copying DVD`s, but i think that most DVD will carry a anti-copy protection anyway.
So would it be worth bringing out a DVD player with a hard drive buit in? it would be handy for recording, but most people have a VHS recorder for that, but if you want better picture quality & sound from recording your favourite tv programs then yes i think it would be a handy addition to a DVD player.
What do you think???
Which means large storage capacitys are becomming cheaper all the time...
Especially if you use a good image compression technique...
Good for recording off TV... also you could rent a DVD from blockbusters, save it to the player and then watch it the next week...
I in a houseshare... so often we'll hire vids, but because I'm going of... or they are, we end up hiring the film a couple of times... this way will provide out wallets with much increased pub time! :)
