This is a story created by a bunch of die-hard Star Trek fans and if you believed Blockbuster, you’d think this was “the funniest spoof since Family Guy: Blue Harvest.” I am ashamed to say that quote on the back of the DVD’s case caused me to purchase this title from Asda this morning, and I feel I have wasted 105 minutes of my life. If the creators are ‘die-hard’ Star Trek fans, they would know what they have created is a terrible spoof that makes Galaxy Quest seem a lot more enjoyable now. Seth McFarlane should consider taking some kind of legal action against Blockbuster for even suggesting a comparison!
The acting is completely over-exaggerated, the direction is amateur and the comedy is non-existant. I’d have more laughs watching re-runs of the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers! The story is as gripping as prison soap* and I think even the translator must have been rather underwhelmed as some of the subtitles are lazy and don’t even make sense! The script is incredibly poor, even for a spoof, and relies heavily on the kind of jokes you’d expect from CBeebies.
The movie does have a few good points though. The CGI cut-scenes aren’t too bad and make some of the Next Generation era look a little slow, however the Dominion War in Star Trek Deep Space Nine beats this easily. Star Wreck also seems to remind me of certain happenings in the Star Trek universe. Going back in time = Star Trek IV: Long Voyage Home; Maggot Hole = Worm Hole; Dwarf and Info = Worf and Data, but the overall plot is just stupid and unbelievable...even for a Star Trek parody.
My best advice is to avoid Star Wreck like the plague. I believe it was made in 2006 however it has obviously been released now to coincide** with the release of the Star Trek movie. I have been told there are many good fan-made Star Trek episodes available on the internet. This is not one of them. Star Wreck by name, wreck by nature.
