"Gates of Eden" by Ethan Coen.
One half of The Coen Bros, responsible for some of the most well written, well scripted, intelligent downright quotable movies of the past 40 years.

It's a collection of short stories from Coen, and they have that trademark Coen "thing" to them.
Reading the 1st one, I can almost see the typical blustery-titan that populates the Coen world.
It's written as you'd expect from a fan of the Coen Bros, and is a delight.
Some excerpts from the 1st story:

"If a guy knows some guys, is at make him a Mafia figure?"
"So...Mr Argos knows some guys?"
"Sure he knows some guys. I know some guys"
"But I, for instance, don't know some guys"
"No, kid. You don't know some guys"

"Ah look, it's Bagadonuts. Look at ya, ya f##in' Bagadonuts, you're a f##in' Bagadonuts, f##in' look at ya!"
"Have we met?"
"Have we met. Have we met. Ya f### ya, no we ain't met ya f##in' Bagadonuts"

If you like Coen Bros movies, you should get this book.
It is most excellent.
Especially the story about a mafia crew trying to set up operation in Minnesota with people that have no idea what the mafia is.

tepid? thats an interesting use of the word? im sure that is a way of describing temperature rather then the QUALITY OF A BOOK. well i would describe Gates At Eden as a mesmerising read, full of page turning qualities and a great anrrative structure and using some of the finest tricks the brothers used in their films: Fargo and Miller is Crossing. we could talk all night about these great elements if the book, but lets just say: if you have a sense of hunour, grab this book now! (or buy it i mean! haha - joke!)

I bought this on hardback when it first came out. I might be missing something but I thought the short stories were seriously lacking. While I enjoy the films the brothers do immensely, I would be hard pushed to remember any one of the stories in Gates Of Eden apart from the one you have mentioned. I just thought them all to be, well, a little tepid :(
