The fantastic news pages of our favorite UKGAMES have reported that Jet Set Willy and Manic Miner are to be translated and transformed for the 'next generation' But is this a moment of celebration or trepidation? If these games are just rushed bodge jobs then it may give a bad name to the classic games of yesteryear, however, if they are 're-mastered' well, classic games could be given a new lease of life.

Jet set willy is a seminal classic, the storyline is as original today as it was back in the early 80's. Willy has had a party and before he can go to bed, his wife orders him to clean the house of bottles and mess. The catch is that willy's house is a very strange place indeed, monks roam the library and strange creatures are a foot (or some type of limb) in the bathroom (which is where you start your perilous quest) and as for the west wing!

I'm not sure if I could cope with seeing this in 3D though. Unless it was done in such a way as to be totally different to Mario, Spyro et al, then it's better off sticking to a 2d game engine and working on a way to make it different (and maybe even superior?) to the original, but keep the same playability.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what the future holds for these games, I'm hoping it's a pleasant surprise.

I didn't ask for a re-cap,but thank you. Actually, I'm sure that Willy had to pick up EMPTY bottles which had been left after a giant party.

I'll stress this again, 3D does not a better game make. Hey, sounds like a good topic....

Put your rose-tinted glasses on right now. Music creator Jester Interactive has confirmed the acquisition of the Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy licenses for next gen and handheld consoles. For those of you that don't know Software Projects' originals were considered two of the finest platformers to grace Spectrum back in the days of yore, even though they were almost impossibly difficult. Manic Miner had you playing Willy the Miner through various single screen levels, jumping over flying boots and the like and tackling conveyor belts. Jet Set Willy was distinctly mad, and charted Willy's mission to collect as much wine as possible from around his enormous house to get past his monstrous wife and get to bed. According to Jester's Chris Morland, speaking to CVG today, the new games will definitely end up on Game Boy Color and next gen formats, most likely PlayStation 2 and Xbox. "At the moment we're at the design stages," he said. "We want to take the old ideas and rejuvenate them. It's highly likely that the next gen versions will be in 3D." The Game Boy Color outing will be "close to the original," Morland added, but "it might be a nice idea to include the original game as well for the handheld". Whatever happens, you definitely get a whole new adventure for your Game Boy. No release dates have been mentioned as yet, but the real question is will this trigger the return of other ‘golden oldies’ such as Outrun and the formidable Sensible Soccer
