I'm trying out a hosting package that allows me to protect directories. I can see how this prevents people accessing the pages in that directory, cos you get asked for a username and password.
But ... would I be able to write a PHP script, running in the root directory, to open and use a file in the protected directory? I wouldnt want the user to have to enter or know the password.
In this case, I'd be using the protected directory to "hide" the file from general access via a URL, but I still want my scripts to access it. Maybe this isnt really the right use for protected directories, though.
