It makes a great change to last-Summer's spending, that's for sure!
Add up the costs of David Bellion, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Tim "T-Ho" Howard altogether, and you've got yourself a total that is only marginally greater than the "dodgy" fee those Scousers payed for Harry Kewell!
HA-HA-HA-HA-HAAA!! :D
And even after all that, we are, today, close to completing a £7m move for Brazillian World Cup-winning midfielder Kleberson, along with his fellow international star Ronaldinho for around £18m...
Compared to the initial signings Fergie's made, these are what you could call "big-money" transfers - something United haven't been "sensibley" making for several years, now - until the arrival of Chelsea's Russian-billionaire, Roman Abramovich, that is...
I think that Sir Alex and, indeed, Peter Kenyon - who has really taken a surprisingly strong interest in United's Summer-signings - see high-spending Chelsea as a real threat when it comes to buying the big-name star-players they're after. And, for once, this is another `Premiership´ team - and not another Real Madrid or Barcelona.
If United don't move quickly for their targets, the chances are that Chelsea will - and get their men (ie. Damien Duff) - hence the signing of Tim Howard, I presume. And that is why they are prepared to offer so-much, now, for Ronaldinho - another player who is wanted by "everybody" and wants to play in the Premiership desperately.
So, you see, the arrival of Roman Abramovich is a good thing.
His big-spending power has made Manchester United realise that it doesn't all "HAVE" to go their way, anymore, and that they must act fast if they are to succeed in their goals.
Also, rumours suggest that we are to lauch a last-minute £17m bid to hijack Duff's "imminent" move to Chelsea... I'd like to see that, now that Kluivert has decided to stay in Spain - yet again!
Even though I agree we havnt bought many big money signings during the fergie reign...Spending £76M on 3 players (seba, rio ,ruud) is a sign of our intentions long before abramovich arrived.
