I think it was Goatboy who said the drumming was somewhat other-worldly, and I can see that, although I sometimes think the whole lot of 'em are on a different plain altogether.
And the packaging is the most original I've ever seen.
Overall a very good album, with some nice changes in pace, from a band not afraid to go against the grain. Also, if you like Tool, check out Leitmotif by Dredg.
Here's that Dredg album I mentioned:

Has a similar kind of style to Lateralus, and in my opinion very good music indeed. Kind of a concept album, with each song playing out part of a story of a man who must cure himself of a moral disease (although this doesn't intrude on or mar the actual quality of the music in any way).
I think you can listen to some thirty second clips as well.
The Opiate EP is ok, but extremely basic compared to where they are now.
Undertow is good, but nasty across-the-board.
Aenima still has some grimace to it (Stinkfist, Pushit) but shows them starting to move away from typical dark subject matter.
Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, havent listened to Tool in an age, need to get back to it.
Since you mentioned the drumming I started listening more intently, and even on tracks I'm familiar with from music videos I realise there's still so much I haven't picked up on. I imagine it's one of those albums that rewards repeated listening.
Now I have to start on the back catalogue, hopefully the Tool website can help me out there.
Positive songs dealing with evolution of the senses, universal consciousness etc etc instead of hatred, guilt, fear and pain.
And yep, extremely unusual packaging. And Danny Carey is, in my opinion, doing drum stuff I can't even begin to understand, let alone play along to with headphones on.
My fav tracks are Parabol/Parabola, Disposition and Schism.
