Once you've got access to the internet does it become a doorway to a communist society? To a degree everyone is equal and many outside world barriers are broken down. Race, religion and geography could be said to not play as big a part as they do in the outside world. A lot of information is available for free, a lot of copyrighted commercial material is available for free.

Anyone can download this.

So has capitalism shot itself in the foot and created it's own nemesis?
Surely the ease of piracy will have an effect on profits sooner or later for any product that can be converted, uploaded and then downloaded.

Wow. Very interesting, and something I had never even thought of.

I suppose, once you are on the internet, we are all equal. However, us people on the internet are only a tiny minority as most of the world's population cannot afford food, never mind the internet. So, you have to succeed in a capitalist society to have access to this communist meeting place.

In a word no. You forget one crucial point Hedfix, accessing the internet requires computers and a degree of IT skill, generally only owned by those with some money in the first place.

Secondly everyone is not equal - there is an obvious divide between dial up, cable, and ADSL users, especially in online gaming, then there is a knowledge divide also, not to mention that many sites charge for content.

And finally, as the internet has become more popular it has become more about selling items than information, hence in no way is it communism.

I would say no.
Simply because a large percentage of sites on the internet are selling something or other and trying to get money off you - which is very capitalist.
This forum wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Special Resereve selling stuff.
And most websites are set-up with an eye on attracting advertising and making money.

However the internet does facilitate and encourage open opinion and individuality. Although these are not outruled by the definition of communism most communist states (in the past) held in their belief that individual opinion should be 'reserved' or just prevented for the good of the communist society as a whole.
Other than that yes the internet is very similar to a communist system.
Well done on an intelligent post.

I guess you are right. On the forum here i could just as easily be reading the opinions of a 12 year old than those of a 20 year old.

I'd agree to an extent. Among online communities everyone is just a member of whatever it may be: a chatroom, a forum, or a gaming clan. No-one is more powerful or weaker than the others, as such.

On the internet, people are almost completely equal - they have access to anything they want. The equality is a bad thing too, because while people are equal, it means their 'tastes' are equally catered for. Paedophiles can find kiddy-porn as easily as someone could find 'regular' porn, for example, all because of their equality as internet users.

It's a free space, where anyone can do as they please, basically. Everyone has equal oppurtunities to access anything they want.

I'd say yes; the internet is a form of communism.

In theory the internet should be a communist society, but many communities create their own hierarchy. For instance, this site has "Just Arrived"s, newbies, regulars, notables, staff etc, and it's the same with many, many places online.

It's just natural human instinct to have some form of hierarchy - ie the alpha male rules the clan, and the beta males compete to become the alpha.

Sorry if that was a little incoherent.

I don't think anyone thought of the problems that would arise from the internet when it was first set up.
