Gladiator is up for 12, including Best Picture (agreed), Best Director (Ridley Scott, agreed) and Best Actor (??)
The Best Actor for Russell Crowe? That made me think, was Gladiator known for its great acting? Sure, it had some of the worlds greatest actors including Oliver Reed, Richard Harris....Russell Crowe?
Thinking back on the film itself, I suppose yes, for an Australian actor to be able to portray a Roman General with such aplomb it must have been quite a feat, and he did it so well that you just didn't notice the acting, the film was just a visual delight.
I'm sure Russell Crowe is delighted to be nominated, but I have an inkling that he may have rather been nominated for Best Actor for another of his films.
So in this case, I think he deserves the award should he win it. He's up against Tom Hanks, though.
Other notables were Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with 10 nominations, Billy Elliot with 3, and Dame Judi Dench and Julie Walters are in the running again.
Steven Soderbergh is up for TWO nominations for Best Director for his direction of Traffic and Erin Brockovich, which gives him a very good chance of pipping our very own Ridley Scott to the post, but being a big fan of Alien, Gladiator, and most of Scott's other great films, I'd rather see Scott get it, but that's just me being British I suppose.
I feel that the Oscar IS the highest accolade that any film maker can receive, it's presented by their peers within the film industry, surely a wonderful tribute.
Who would you like to see get which Oscar and why?
