1. Why should the more powerful consoles win the fight? They wont, Sony will polish up Xbox and Game cube just as they did their more powerful rivals N64 and DC through ingenious marketing and hundreds more games.
2. Sony are on the ball. Games have been in the news alot recently with Sega's oh so sad news and Sony have been straight into play snapping up Sega titles.
They are forever buying people out, making partnerships and basically innovating to make 100% certain they stay ahead of the competition so they can continue to deliver.
Sony: We've partnered up with Nokia to widen possibilities
Microsoft: errr..the Xbox is really powerful.
Sony: We've got support from just about every developer in the world, even Sega.
Microsoft: errr...Xbox is more powerful than PS2.
Sony:We've bought out many small games developers to ensure they will be able to produce quality games.
Microbrain: Errr.....we're rich, i mean we've got stuff err games eerrrrr DVD-money-money-tecknology-bill gates-err-polygons-stuff-games-sherbert fountains-arghhhhh!!
Sony: Ahh well, i guess our marketing, support and brains will get us through again. HAHA!!!
;0)
.. they need hardware out there that they own, at the moment sucessful though they are, they are at the whim of the computer sellers, who if they decide they dont want to bundle the latest OS of windows or find a cheaper alternative then Microsoft will be in for a rough ride. By pushing the X-box Microsoft would have a set top TV box with software they control solely, and even when competitors make games or peripherals for their machine theyll still make money...which is Microsofts goal.
Also its going to be alot easier to make games for the X-box, due to its PC like architechture. Its should also be able to play Dreamcast games (according to rumours). Apparently the PS2 is hard to program on, which could mean a year from now the X-box looks like a more attractive option.
Plus I dont see why it wont be able to play normal PC games too! If that happened then the X-box will sell by the bucketload, and the PS2 will be stuffed. Most of the PS2s best games will be available on PC and therefore X-box.
All in all this means the PS2 has to deliver some killer PS2 only games in order to keep its market position.
Even the Gamecube may overcome the PS2, as we know it wont be held back by the cost of cartridge production that was responsible for poor N64 third party support. In addition it should be the cheapest console available at launch, and it will no doubt have some original and imaginative new games available at launch. Not to mention the fact that the GameBoyAdvance has no competition, will sell millions of units and will become the worlds most popular console (like the Gameboy before it), feeding off this popularity the Gamecube should sell well.
1. It's £300.
2. There is no real selection. "If you don't like SSX or TimeSplitters, you're stuffed."
Well, let's have some points why the PS2 will bounce-back into the market like a hyped-up-chicken on a space-hopper drinking coffee:
1. When the Gamecube /XBox comes out, the PS2 price will drop an estimated £50-60, leaving the £300 XBox high and dry.
2. Have you seen the great lineup for March? Star Wars: Starfighter is a space/air combat game (based on the rockin' Phantom Menace!) that will test the PS2 to the full limit! Grand Theft Auto 3 is coming out, all rendered in gorgeous 3D! Z.O.E will be one of Konami's great & decent (next to MGS2) and Summoner will rock this world!
Not mentioning Unreal and all the other great (some Shenmue-style) games that will come up over the next 2 months.
I'm gonna make Bill Gates roll in his game!!!
I hope dearly that Microsoft do NOT gain the lion's share of the console market, particularly coming from an Amiga background, but I really think people shouldn't doubt their marketing savvy and financial clout.
Mr Gates (spud though he is) didn't become the richest anorak in the world by accident. (maybe he financed his early business moves by using his hilarious and unintentional Kermit the Frog impersonation; have you SEEN that guy on TV?)
Not dissing you, man, but maybe PS2 won't be (shock horror) the most successful of the current generation of consoles.
Maybe now is the time for the console market to splinter into different niches; set-top boxes, games-only, digital content access devices.....
maybe the market will only survive this way; maybe only traditionalists like Nintendo truly know their way.
still, I digress.
