Costs
The nintendo is at a bit of a disadvantage here by choosing to stick with carts instead of the much cheaper and easier to make cd's. Having carts made by nintendo makes games more expensive because other companies have to actually buy these carts. The playstation has a good system with platinum games at a good £20 this is great for the teenage gamer who couldn't buy games at a higher price. With the cheaper games the market opens allowing more games to be crammed into an already huge software market.
Games
Nintendo have always had the advantage of owning such classic characters as Mario and Pokemon. They have in some cases tried to squeeze every drop of money by exploiting things like Pokemon. However though it has to be said there are fewer Nintendo games they are all of a very high standard. Every so often there comes a game eveyone wants like perfect dark or Zelda it is these games that keep the ninty in buisness. The Playstation has a huge range of games and all at a low price so the younger gamer can afford them. Though few of the games are as famous as nintendoes they have managed to grab a couple of great names like Konami and Namco.
Sucessors
The PS2 is already out and with the gamecube not due to be released till next year then Playstation definitly wins this round.
Overall Playability
The nintendo suits the role of a family console with games both young and old would enjoy. The downfall is the price of games at around £40 each no-one is gonna be buying too many at a time. Nintendo has always been a family console and this has been passed down to the N64.
The playstation a good console for adolescent gamers with cheap and some gory games. The playstation is perfect for the teens of the world and with the introduction of the PS one with built in screen Playstation may take over the games market and the ps one with screen may phase out the gameboy.
So at the moment you can see that Playstation have managed this victory and will continue to be a great console name.
Welcome back!
Now you all know that I'm a PS1/PS2 fan, but I have a problem with this.
Nintendo, as far as I know, aren't sticking with cartridges - the GameCube uses mini-DVD's.
PlayStation is the biggest selling "full" console - Gameboy is the biggest selling over all.
And, even with the screen, I don't think the new PSone will outsell the Gameboy. PSone is small, cute and cuddly, sure... but it's not truly portable.
What is it the PSX is up to now in terms of sales? 28 million or so I think?
Best selling console, says enough.
