After hearing someone (sag I think) mention Altered Carbon I've got that and Morgan's follow up on my summer list, along with Chuck Berry's autobiography. But I'm looking for some more interesting crime stuff. I'm a big fan of Lawrence Block's Matt Scudder mysteries if you need a reference point.
James Ellroy all the way.
Sparse, brutal and uncompromising. His Mum was murdered when he was a kid and you could say it's had an effect on his life! He wrote the book that LA Confidential (the film - GREAT film!) was based on (though the novel is FAR more complex than the film.)
Also worth checking out Elmore Leonard - good mixture of humour and drama. LOADS of his book have been made into films too (eg. Get Shorty and Jackie Brown).

P.D James is pretty good, just read Death in Holy Orders. It won't change your world, but it's a nice to plod through in the holidays.
Not really detective but Colin Forbes is a good read - got some form of mystery in it. More thriller / spy kind of stuff, but very nice to read.
And Greg illes (I think that's how you spell it) is really good. Dead Sleep I very much enjoyed, and just read Sleep No More which is a bit weird with lots of sex in it. And The Quiet Game is brilliant.
