Some of you will have heard about this great British comedy that was on E4 a few years back. With series 2 being released now a lot more people starting to watch this show and I have to say, everyone I have spoken to has been astounded that they never watched it before! With series 1 being £6.99 on most internet sites, it is one of the cheapest DVD’s you will pick up for a series. Sadly there are only 6 episodes in the first season, I say sadly because each instalment is as funny as the last and you never want the show to stop.
So for anyone new to the programme, it is based around Will, a young man joining public education for the first time after his dad left his mum. He joins the first year of sixth form and is keen to make new friends in his new school. Coming from private education is unaware of all the usual things that occur in the schools and the kind of people who inhabit them. Being the subject of bullying at a private school means he is in for a real treat in his new school. Keen to make a new impression in his suit and briefcase he is soon shown the harsh reality of sixth form and is being called every name under the sun within the first 10 minutes. Once he makes it to his class he is soon given a guide to show him around, Simon. Not the most popular person by a long shot but having Will by his side will not help his chances of becoming cooler any time soon.
The first episode brings you in contact with the main characters in the series, Will and Simon who I have mentioned, but Simon’s long time friends; Neil and Jay. While Will and Simon are rather more shy and timid, these two are far from it. Neil is the simple, lanky boy who laughs at everything. Being poor and having a supposedly gay dad has never helped him from being the target of most jokes by his friends. Jay is a foul mouthed liar who makes up story after story just to train gain some credibility and look like he has had plenty of luck with the ladies to impress all of his friends, but it is obvious from how he speaks, he has never had any luck with the opposite sex.
So we have met all of Will’s new friends and have seen his new school. While I say his friends, they are less than keen to be seen with Will and try to organize their own plans but always have Will tag along. The next 5 episodes follow the four sixth formers on their quest to loose their virginity and make it through sixth form in one piece. From girlfriends to field trips you will experience life in their shows and remember how life was. Probably the most inviting thing about this show is that you will relate to the characters or some of the scenes in some shape or form. They will trigger memories of your school days and have you in fits if laughter so many times.
From bunking off school, to trying to buy alcohol under age, there are so many different things which will keep you watching and laughing until the DVD has stopped. Some of the language is pretty strong and repulsive when Jay is involved and girls do not always enjoy that section, but my girlfriend who has never seen this show before has had me play episodes time and time again because she loves it so much. The language they use and the thoughts they have will surely allow you to relate to them and keep you wanting to see more.
I mentioned earlier it is a shame that the series is so short, but on the plus side it does keep everything fresh and it never gets boring like a lot of shows have a problem with. The incidents they get themselves into kept me laughing all the way through and some of their sayings are constantly quotes around where I work. To be honest I am actually still yet to find someone who dislikes this series. There are no big names involved in the cast (well none I knew) and this made it all seem a lot more believable, I really don’t think it would have worked as well if there were more famous people involved. The on-screen relationships develop superbly and it all feels like your part of this newly form circle of friends.
I could continue talking about scenes in the show and how tings pan out but it really would spoil a fantastic British comedy, and one of the best I have seen in a very long time. It is referred to as a mix of American pie and Peep Show, which is a pretty fair comparison. I say this because it has the teen style humour of American pie with the awkwardness that makes us all laugh at Peep Show. Now comparing a relatively unheard show to a big film and very successful series is a brave statement I know, but I would be very confident that you would be in the same mind after seeing it and even think more.
So all I can do now is say, for £7 you could have one of my all time favourite TV comedy shows, you really don’t have too much to loose. Like I mentioned before, everyone I have recommended this too has thanked me for introducing it to them and I am hoping if your not a fan all ready then you will be doing the same very shortly!
While there are some flaws I am sure, I can’t think of any to tell you and I have enjoyed watching this DVD more than most, so I have to give it;
10/10
Thanks for reading, and hope you take my advice!
Nice review anyway.
Been told I should like it though as it's "my sense of humour".
