You've got a block of plastic with a dome on the top.
Inside the dome there is (this is just and example) a model of a wrestling arena. With the seats, a titantron, and ring (without any ropes).
You now plug it in and it comes to life with...
HOLOGRAMS!
The ropes, chararcters, crowd. They'll all be done by holograms.
It'll be like you've got little people inside this little dome.
The only downside would be that it would be incredibly expensive and only one game (due to the preset modelling inside the dome) per game.
But you'd keep it in the box and take it out at weekends for family fun!
There'd be plenty of other games you could make on it eg.
Chess (like in that starwars film) and boxing etc.
It'll be the new innovation!
Gas based holograms are a reality. They can already be done, at a price, and can represent any image that can be read by a laser.
Programmers would simply have to have the right hardware to pre-render their holograms and release the data on CD etc.
No-one would seriously consider releasing these as games consoles though due to the cost and danger of toxic gasses. Roll on the next wave of technology.
It would
> be nice if some people actually read it!
I read it.
Didn't think I could really add anything to your point though, so I didn't bother.
Now I have done, and I've added exactly nothing worthwhile to this thread.
This is the real future of gaming!

That was sort of what I had in mind as one game.
Anyway, I've thought of another idea now.
The plastic block (which had the computer, hologram control etc), you'd only need one.
You could unscrew the dome, remove the model scenery (which had the game chip on it) and replace it with another game when you wanted.
The only problem I can see with this dome hologram thing is that first person shooters are imposible on it.
You can only see the area inside the dome so it won't be good for games with large maps.
People with 3D sickness will probably not be affected by it and you won't need a TV either.
Think about it...
It might not sound much now but it's certainly what the future holds.
It's much better than "seemed like a good idea at the time" virtual reality anyway!
