Or the alien popping out of John Hurt's chest in the original Alien? An all-time classic movie moment which spawned a lot of cool T-shirts in the late 70s.
But being somewhat innured to shock movies now, I find the scary bits are the scenes that build up, then keep building up, to the monumental climaxes, which more and more often nowadays just don't seem to be as great as they used to be.
Wes Craven did some great work with the original Nightmare on Elm Street, with the last few seconds of the movie still holding some great surprises, but the followups just seemed to be more of the same.
I suppose more recently Scream was a good 'scary movie', but more fun than anything horrific. If I had to pick one great scary movie it would be Silence of the Lambs; Hannibal Lecter (Sir Anthony Hopkins) is definately the nastiest characters out of the lot of them.
