Montoya takes the win as Barrichello causes chaos

Juan Pablo Montoya has won the French Grand Prix with a flawless display. In the early laps, he had an almighty battle with De La Rosa in which he took the lead. A slowish stop brought him into the clutches of Wilson and Verstappen but held off the challenges to win.

While the leading few went round, Barrichello was causing chaos behind them. Barrichello was the victim of a spin from Firman in which they both lost places but after that, he caused total mayhem.

Barrichello got it all wrong and ran off the track. Unfortunately, he careered back onto the track and slammed into Raikkonen, forcing Raikkonen to retire on lap 10. Barrichello needed a new front wing. He stopped in the pits and on returning to the track, he spun. Later on in the race, he made contact with Michael Schumacher pitching both of them into a spin. Barrichello topped it all off with another spin near the end.

Raikkonen was the first retirement of the race but certainly wasn't the last. On lap 13, Ralf Schumacher's race came to an end with wheel damage and that brought an abrupt end to his recent renaissance. De La Rosa's race ended on lap 15 with a puncture on what looked like a possible race win. Pizzonia spun out of the race on lap 28. Wilson's engine blew on lap 31 while in the lead and fending of Montoya. Irvine crashed out of the race on lap 56. Heidfeld's engine went on lap 58. Firman was the last retirement on lap 66 with an engine failure but was classifed 15th.

A few cars had slight moments during the race. Fisichella, Webber, Pizzonia, Trulli, Panis and Da Matta all had little moments. A major incident involved Frentzen, Michael Schumacher and Alonso. Frentzen made the initial mistake and spun in the middle of the track. Michael Schumacher had nowhere to go and slammed into Frentzen, both sustaining front wing damage. Schumacher's front wing landed in front of Alonso, who ran over it causing front wing damage. All 3 had to come in for new front wings.

Montoya will still consider himself a Championship contender after this race win in France. Verstappen adds a second place to his race win at the Nurburgring. Fisichella takes a solid 3rd place but it could have been better if he had kept it on the track. Button will be delighted with 4th after starting 17th and Villeneuve finishes 5th to keep their Championship challenges alive. Alonso survived front wing damage to finish in 6th and keep his healthy lead in the Championship. Trulli finally gets some more points with 7th place and Panis takes the last points place in 8th.
