Reading the news on the Tomb Raider extra set for the DVD, I was struck with an idea, which was namely this. Why don't the film companies and game companies get together and put a film and PC game on a duel sided DVD?

Now, I know this wouldn't sound a popular idea to most money-grabbing film or game companies, but it would suppliment a single release of the DVD and bring together two mediums that seem well matched together. Imagine watching Lara swing into action in the movie, then flip the disc and play it yourself. Not only could this be used on a PC, but a PS2 version could easily be created as well. Game and film combinations are made for each other and the lack of packaging and amount of discs would be a bonus. Besides, action movies always want to make me go and play an action game, and to have something that ties in with what you've been watching is all the more thrilling.

If the format works, then you could see future films by Lucasfilm teaming up with Lucasarts and maybe (just maybe) we might be watching Luke fly down that Deathstar trench, and then play a new Star Wars game straight after. All in one package. Well, I can dream can't I?!

No, I still think it is a good idea. Trouble is, not ALL films are made into games, and I reckon you'd need some extra tooling to produce a DVD of that nature.

Another problem would be DVDs play on all DVD players, but you'd then have to have different formats for different games DVD players (PS2/PC etc.).

And currently if a game is too buggy you send it back and get a replacement. In the new format you would be losing your film at the same time, and have to find something else to do whilst you wait for 4 weeks for it to come back.

A good idea, but fraught with potential problems, but I think it WILL happen in the future when someone has done their homework on the pitfalls and ironed out any looming creases in the cloth of the solution.

(Sorry, went all metaphorical towards the end.)

hm, never really thought of that. But if the game and the film could both be good, then it's a good idea right?

Surely if the game was to be released seperately as well as in the pack it would be better, like Superman the movie with er....Superman the game (er, bad choice) or Tomb Raider with oh, um....Tomb Raider TLR (I'm failing here aren't I?) or perhaps Indiana Jones and the Infernal (arrghh, my arguement is falling apart!)

Right, I'm off to think up a better idea.

mumble mumble film tie-ins mumble mumble.

I suppose as graphics get better and better, we will be playing games more than watching films.

The distance between Rambo-First Blood, the movie, and Rambo-First Blood, the game on the C64, was quite vast.

Although looking at Rogue Squadron 2 today, it looks like the bridge will be completed very soon.

I'm not sure if the idea would take off anyway pb. Too much hassle, and I expect the games would be crap. You did take Tomb Raider as an example mind, and both the film and game are going to be crap.

By the way, I think you won DVDaday. Well done. ;D
