Anyway, last Tuesday I had the chance to meet one of wrestling's legends, Mick Foley. He mentioned he was doing two other signings in the UK, so I don't know if anyone else attended, but they were queue up- buybook- get autograph- goodbye jobs. Luckily, mine was a bonafide meeting, and here's how it went.
As a ticket only event, there was LOADS of people hanging around the top floor of Waterstones, London. Most didn't have the ticket and were greatful just to get a sight, but as the lucky owner of the ticket I got there early and got a seat in the front row, literally a metre and a half away from him - rather than queuing up to get autographs, he did a Q&A session with a book guy, where he talked mostly about the book, and then took questions from the fans. Unfortunately, only the little kids got the chance, so it was 'what was your favourite match' questions rather than insightful, provocative inquirings (like the one I was planning about Mr Socko).
One thing that doesn't really come across on TV is his size - Foley is very tall, and basically just a really big guy - God knows what meeting someone like the Big Show must be like in real life. He's also genuinely funny, and like the books, he spent most of the time taking the mickey out of Al Snow and Test. Someone in the crowd actually made an Al Snow joke which Foley laughed at, whihc meant loads of idiots making the same jokes after to try and get Foley to laugh, but was met only be groans from the audience (which was only about 50-60 people, with more outside).
When asked about a return to the ring, he said he was considering it, and really enjoyed actively participating recently, but said he would only do it IF he felt he could be as good as before. After the Q&A session, which lasted an hour, it was signing time! Because Mick thought it was only us 50 to get autographs, he promised to spend some time talking to each of us, but he realised there was loads outside. Being the nice guy that he is, he went out and promised everyone else they'd get an autograph - a genuinely nice thing to do, but I was ticked off because my chances of a talk with the King of th Death Match evaporated.
And so the queue began. At first people were getting loads of stuff signed, but as time went the Waterstones people were telling people to do less stuff because he had to leave etc. and he'd promised everyone an autograph. After a while, it was my turn. Luckily, I was the last person to get a photo with Foley - we both did a thumbs up and it was great, hopefully it will come up good on camera. I'll try and get it online so you can see a pic of the Hardcore Legend....and Mick Foley. Nah, I have a feeling I was looking like an idiot. He asked my name and how I was, then signed his new book and a copy of a 'Have a Nice Day', and was about to talk to me again when some Waterstones biatch told him to hurry up as the queue was still long - he apologised, we shook hands again and that was it. He was very polite though was a little tetchy because I think he'd gone from the airport straight to here - the little kids he was nice too though. All in all, it was brilliant - I never thought I'd have the chance to meet him, but it went really well, and I was smiling for about 5mins after.
Oh yeah, and his new book was out as well.
It's cool that he's pretty much what you would expect from Mick, fun etc.
And I'm also jealous.
Hope you had a good time. :-D
