how can companies sell mp3 players or minidisc players when this clearly supports the illegal action of downloading music from the internet or copying discs. if corporations are tracking down these people and music companies are losing money, then how can sony or whoever do this legally. how? and also, if this does continue, surely the future is for music companies to take a share from the sales of the players. apparently they are introducing un-copiable discs now on everything, games cds etc. whereas before only things like the sims did it before.

I agree, they do make far too much cash. By downloading their music, they don't make as much money, but theey don't lose any and it's not as if their lifestyle is going to dramaticaly change...

that cant be right, otherwise i could give them out for free to friends andthe companies still lose £100's. or i could give them out as gifts then recieve a sum of money which is also a gift.

also there are things on the internet that, if you download it, it can change your cds in drive d:/ into a script (music only of course) and surely that is illegal because of traditional copyright laws.

It is only illegal if you sell the copied CD, I think.

I thought it was legal to change a console once you've bought it? You just void the warranty. I read up on chipping the xbox and all you do is void the warranty.

Minidisc was originally developed by Sony and it used to get proper releases on it. Designed as a sort of CD replacement. It then just sort of blossomed from that.

MP3 is different. It was developed by the Motion Picture Experts Group. Or the studios themselves in other words. At first it seemed like a good idea. Solid state players for files smaller than an audio file. Solid state so it can't skip.

But then CD burners got far more common, the internet grew, people started to rip files and send them over the net instead of just using for their own good.

So piracy grew.

The public line is that the MP3 players are so people can rip songs from CD to MP3 allowing them to store more songs/a larger variety of songs on a smaller space.

Nothing can really be done about it, if MP3 players weren't allowed, then shouldn't CD-Writers, DVD-Writers, even video recorders because they let you record films from TV instead of buying an official copy, be disallowed as well? Then as well, most CD players (which you should really be using to listen to an album or single) will record the CD onto cassette.

Most technology can be factored into piracy.

Sony are probably the worst seeing as they make MP3 players yet have a whole host of stars under thier record label.

I suppose it's like game piracy - you can own the chip perfect legally, but once it goes into the PlayStation it becomes illegal.

Also, I think there are some sites that charge a certain amount for MP3s, although I don't really download music so I'm not sure.
